Video: Dubai Police warns e-scooter riders as 5 dead, 29 injured in 8 months
Riders reminded about safety guidelines they must adhere to
Dubai: Over the past eight months, Dubai Police has reported 32 accidents involving electric bicycles and e-scooters. Regrettably, these incidents claimed five lives and resulted in 29 injuries. Of the injured, two were severe cases, 14 moderate and 13 minor.
Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said 10,031 fines were imposed on riders of electric bicycles and e-scooters during this period. He underscored the commitment of Dubai Police to instil traffic awareness and education amongst all road users and, consequently, decrease traffic accidents and human loss on the roads.
Al Mazroui stressed the importance of bicycle and e-scooter riders adhering to safety measures.
“These include respecting traffic laws, sticking to designated paths, avoiding roads with speeds exceeding 60km/h, wearing helmets and reflective jackets, adhering to traffic lights and other road signs, and equipping rides with bright white and reflective lights at the front, as well as bright red and reflective lights at the back. It’s also imperative that the vehicles have functioning brakes,” he explained.
Al Mazroui emphasised that all road users, including drivers, passengers and pedestrians, have the right to use the roads safely and highlighted the force’s dedication to ensuring the highest levels of compliance with traffic regulations, making the roads of the emirate safer. He clarified that Dubai Police tirelessly works towards road safety operations.
“These operations focus on reducing violations of traffic laws and catching up with reckless drivers,” he added.
