Woman jailed for robbing Dh100,000 from massage client

Defendant lured Russian businessman for massage at flat where she robbed his money at knifepoint

Dubai: A jobless woman, who lured a businessman for a massage and stole his Dh100,000 at knifepoint after confining him in a hotel room, was jailed for six months on Sunday.

The Russian businessman was searching for a massage service on a dating app and came across a WhatsApp number promoting massage in ajmjmu hotel in Al Barsha.

After he communicated with a woman [who created a profile on the app] via WhatsApp, the Russian headed to the hotel and went up to the third-floor room.

When he knocked on the door, a woman opened and invited him inside before another woman jumped from behind the door and they locked him inside.

Two Nigerian women, aged 32 and 33, were reported to have pointed a knife at the businessman’s neck and coerced him to give them his bag.

The two women stole Dh100,000 in cash after they threatened to kill the Russian and kept him locked up for a while and then released him.

The businessman reported the matter to the police once they let him go. Police apprehended the two women.

The Dubai Court of First Instance jailed the 33-year-old Nigerian woman for six months for confining the businessman, robbing him at knifepoint, threatening to kill him and using someone else’s passport and submitting it to the police and giving a wrong name during an official investigation.

The 33-year-old accused will be deported.

Presiding judge Shaikha Hamad acquitted the 32-year-old woman due to lack of evidence.

According to the accusation sheet, prosecutors said the two women and other suspects who remain at large committed the crime.

The Nigerian women pleaded not guilty when they appeared in court.

A police lieutenant testified that the suspects lured the businessman for a massage and provided him with the address.

“The Russian claimed the suspects pointed a knife at his neck and threatened to kill him if he didn’t give them his money. The suspects let the businessman go once he gave them his bag that contained Dh100,000 in cash. Preliminary investigation revealed that the 32-year-old suspect had rented the hotel room … the latter was apprehended from another hotel on Shaikh Zayed Road. The 33-year-old was arrested a few days later and she provided us with a Nigerian passport that belonged to someone else,” the lieutenant claimed to prosecutors.

Sunday’s ruling remains subject to appeal.
