Medical staff say patient ingested the objects over unspecified period of time
Dubai: Doctors in the Iraqi city of Sulaymaniyah successfully removed 24 sharp objects, including hair removal tweezers and sewing needles, from the stomach of a 29-year-old man.
The procedure was carried out at the Sulaymaniyah Hospital for Gastroenterology and Hepatology, where the patient had arrived complaining of severe abdominal pain.
Radiological imaging revealed foreign metallic and pointed objects lodged inside his stomach, including 16 tweezers, 8 needles, and two tweezer caps.
“We conducted an endoscopic procedure under general anaesthesia,” said Dr Mustafa Abdulrahman, deputy director of the hospital. “In just one hour, we were able to extract all the items safely.”
Medical staff confirmed that the patient suffers from psychiatric disorders that led him to ingest the objects over an unspecified period.
Despite the potentially life-threatening nature of the situation, the man is now in stable condition and recovering under medical supervision.
The patient, a resident of Sulaymaniyah, has since been referred for psychiatric evaluation and follow-up care.
Dr Abdulrahman noted that such cases are not as rare as they might seem. “We see similar incidents almost daily, involving both children and adults,” he said. “Family awareness and psychological monitoring play a crucial role in prevention.”
