Hamas announced on Saturday that it is ready to “immediately” begin negotiations with Israel over a US-brokered proposal for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza.

The deal, put forward by US President Donald Trump and accepted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is expected to be a key agenda item during Netanyahu’s upcoming visit to Washington on Monday.

Hostage release part of initial deal

Under the proposed framework, Hamas would release half of the 50 hostages it currently holds in the initial phase of the ceasefire. The deal would also initiate mediated talks aimed at ending the war, which erupted in October 2023 and has since claimed tens of thousands of Palestinian lives while severely damaging Gaza’s infrastructure.

Hamas responds positively to mediators

In a statement, Hamas confirmed it had concluded internal consultations and discussions with other Palestinian factions and delivered its response to mediators. “The movement has submitted its response to the brothers mediators, characterized by a positive spirit,” the group stated.

Trump expresses optimism on Gaza talks

Speaking late Friday, US President Trump expressed hope for a breakthrough. “There could be a Gaza deal next week,” he said, adding that he was “very optimistic, but it changes day to day.” Despite earlier Israeli agreement to the proposal, mediators including the US, Qatar, and Egypt have struggled to bridge gaps between the two sides.

Ceasefire talks face challenges

Hamas has remained firm on several conditions, including that any ceasefire must lead to a permanent end to the war. It has also rejected Israel’s demands to disarm and relinquish control in Gaza. Meanwhile, Israel has escalated military operations in Gaza, ordering evacuations and intensifying airstrikes in the north, particularly around Gaza City, leading to increased casualties.

War’s toll continues to mount

The conflict, now in its tenth month, has destabilised the region, with widespread humanitarian fallout. A potential agreement could mark a turning point, pausing hostilities and opening the door to broader peace talks—though significant hurdles remain.
