Muscat Four Omanis were killed and three critically injured after a horrific accident on Tuesday evening on the mountainous roads of Dhofar in southern Oman, according to a Royal Oman Police (ROP) press release Wednesday.

"Four vehicles were involved in the accident including three trucks and a saloon car, which was a complete wreck," according to a spokesperson for the ROP's Public Relations Department.

"A truck broke down on the downhill section of the road and another truck coming from behind rammed into it," he said, adding that the truck then veered off the road, broke through the barrier and went on the opposite side of the track.

Car, truck collide

Two on-coming vehicles, a truck and the saloon, car rammed into the truck killing all the occupants of the saloon car. The vehicles continued to roll down the hilly road even after crashing and caught fire after hitting the mountain.

Two Omanis died on the spot while another two died after being admitted to the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah.

"Two of them were burned to death on the spot," the police spokesperson said.

The police, ambulances and civil defence personnel rushed to the spot as soon as they were intimated, but could not put off fire before the occupants were fatally burnt.

Meanwhile, the police statistics revealed that 97 people died in 749 road accidents in different parts of Oman during last month.
