An EasyJet flight from Hurghada, Egypt, to Manchester, UK, was forced to make an emergency landing in Athens, Greece, after the captain suffered a medical emergency mid-flight. The incident occurred about two hours into the journey on February 8.

Passengers reported that cabin crew members were serving drinks when they abruptly rushed to the front of the aircraft in response to a medical situation. Initially, it was unclear who was affected, but it was later announced that the captain had become unwell and required immediate medical attention.

Emergency diversion to Athens

The first officer assumed control of the aircraft and initiated a diversion to Athens International Airport. The plane circled the airport before executing a successful emergency landing. Emergency services, including paramedics, were on standby upon arrival to assist the incapacitated captain.

The unexpected turn of events led to heightened anxiety among passengers. One traveller recounted, “We started to panic. I got upset once I felt how rocky and rough the landing was and started to panic thinking it was the end.” Another passenger experienced a panic attack and was provided with an oxygen mask by the crew.

Crew commended for professionalism

Despite the challenging circumstances, passengers praised the co-pilot and cabin crew for their professionalism and effective handling of the situation. Upon landing, the co-pilot received commendations from those on board for safely guiding the aircraft to the ground.

Accommodation and apology

Following the emergency landing, passengers were accommodated in Athens overnight. EasyJet arranged hotel rooms and meals where available and issued an apology for the inconvenience, emphasising that the safety and well-being of passengers and crew are their top priorities.

An EasyJet spokesperson said: “EasyJet can confirm that flight EZY2252 from Hurghada to Manchester yesterday evening was diverted to Athens ... The First Officer performed a routine landing ... .”
