A British couple tragically lost their lives after their Ferrari 488 veered off a mountain road and crashed into a river in northern Spain.

The accident occurred around 2pm on Saturday as the pair, aged 78 and 58, were driving along the scenic yet treacherous N-621 highway in Spain’s Leon province, according to Metro.

The couple were part of a 20-car convoy of British Ferrari enthusiasts participating in a rally through the region.

Their high-performance black Ferrari 488, valued at approximately £300,000, lost control near the town of Boca de Huergano and plunged off a cliff into the Yuso River.

Emergency services faced significant difficulty accessing the wreckage, which had come to rest upside down and partially submerged in the river.

Hours later, recovery teams managed to reach the site and flip the crushed vehicle for extraction, according to Metro. Authorities have yet to confirm whether the couple drowned or died on impact.

The N-621 is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes but is also infamous for its sharp bends and steep descents. Local officials regularly advise caution due to the road’s narrow passages and unpredictable terrain — factors that can be especially dangerous for powerful vehicles like the Ferrari 488, which can reach speeds of over 200 mph.

The convoy had reportedly arrived in the area just a day before the fatal crash. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident, with authorities examining possible factors such as driver error, mechanical failure, or road conditions.
