Suu Kyi stripped of seventh honour

The politician and Nobel peace prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi has had her Freedom of Edinburgh award revoked, making this the seventh honour that she has lost since the violence erupted.

Councillors voted on Friday a motion to strip the honour amid charges that she has ignored violence against the Rohingya in Myanmar.

Suu Kyi was given the freedom of the city in 2005 for championing democracy while living under house arrest.

Cities in the United Kingdom, such as Oxford, Glasgow and Newcastle and now Edinburgh have all revoked Suu Kyi’s honorary awards as the leader’s international reputation has been tarnished over the crimes committed in Myanmar.
