Two earthquakes hit central and southern Philippines

Manila: Two earthquakes hit central and southern Philippines on Tuesday.

A temblor measuring 3.2 magnitude in the Richter scale occurred five kilometers north of La Libertad in Negros Oriental, central Philippines at 6:58am, the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Another earthquake measuring 4.5 magnitude in the Richter scale, happened 33 kilometres northeast of Lingig, Surigao del Sur at 12:25pm. This tectonic earthquake sent intensity three in Bislig City, and Intensity two in Butuan City, also in the south, Phivolcs said.

The two quakes did not result in damages, Phivolcs said.

The two quakes on Tuesday were the "intensification of four other earthquakes that occurred nationwide on April 2," Phivolcs said.

The first of the four temblors that occurred on April 2 measured 3.6 magnitude, 36 kilometre east of Basco, Batanes, northernmost Philippines at 1:31am; followed by 3.6 magnitude, 36 kilometre of Hinunangan, southern Leyte, central Philippines at 3:35am.

The two succeeding quakes on April 2 were 3.5 magnitude, 11 kilometre of Jimalulud, Negros Oriental, central Philippines at 4:45pm of Tuesday; and 2.4 magnitude, 2.4 kilometre of Bindoy, Negros Oriental, central Philippines at 5:01pm.

Six other quakes also occurred nationwide on April 1, Phivolcs said.

The Philippines is part of Asia Pacific's "Ring of Fire" where earthquakes always occur.
