Pakistan has officially inducted the Z-10ME, a Chinese-built attack helicopter, into its military arsenal — marking a significant upgrade in its aerial combat capabilities.
The helicopter, similar to models China uses along its border with India, is designed for precision strikes in all weather conditions, both day and night.
The Pakistan Army Aviation Corps held an induction ceremony on Saturday, describing the Z-10ME as a “state-of-the-art” platform. While the number of helicopters acquired was not disclosed, officials confirmed that the aircraft is equipped with advanced radar and electronic warfare systems, Bloomberg reported.
This induction marks a major step in replacing Pakistan’s ageing fleet of US-made AH-1 Cobra and Russian Mi-35 Hind helicopters. The acquisition also represents the first export deal for the Z-10ME, according to Chinese state media outlet Global Times.
Manufactured by Changhe Aircraft Industries Corp., the Z-10ME is an upgraded export version of China’s Z-10, which is deployed in sensitive areas such as the Tibet Plateau and the Taiwan Strait.
Previous attempts to integrate the Z-10 into Pakistan’s fleet failed, with three helicopters sent for trials in 2015 later returned due to performance issues, as reported by Defence News.
The Z-10ME now features enhanced low-altitude flight, improved situational awareness, and is considered a cost-effective alternative to Western platforms.
The induction follows Pakistan’s recent announcement to purchase additional Chinese weapons, including advanced fighter jets. Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, who presided over the ceremony, had met senior Chinese defence officials in July. Vice-Chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, Zhang Youxia, has pledged deeper strategic cooperation.
