Landmark divorce ruling: Woman seeks $6,800 for housework, court shocks with 5X payout

A court in Zhengzhou, China, awarded a woman 250,000 yuan ($35,000) in a divorce settlement, significantly exceeding the 50,000 yuan ($6,800) she initially requested, according to a South China Morning Post (SCMP) report.

The ruling, which compensated the woman for years of unpaid household labour, has sparked widespread online approval.

The woman, surnamed Hu, sought compensation from her husband, surnamed Wang, citing her extensive contributions to household chores and childcare since their 2011 marriage. After a separation in 2022 due to escalating disputes, Hu filed for divorce, demanding recognition for her unpaid domestic work.

The Zhongyuan District Court, in its March verdict, granted Hu custody of their daughter and ordered Wang to pay child support. Crucially, the court also awarded Hu the 250,000 yuan lump sum, acknowledging the value of her years of household labour.

Legal justification for the ruling

Judge emphasised that while housework is intangible, it holds significant value and should be shared equitably. The verdict aligns with China’s Civil Code, which allows compensation for a spouse who shoulders a disproportionate share of domestic responsibilities.

Public reaction sparks debate

The verdict ignited lively discussions on Chinese social media. Many praised the court’s decision, with one user commenting, “Thumbs-up to the court’s wise ruling.”

Another added, “Many men don’t realise how exhausting housework is.”

However, some questioned whether men should also be compensated for their household contributions, such as driving and providing security.
