Bengaluru, India: Four members of a family, including a software consultant, his wife and their two children, were found dead in their rented home in Bengaluru.

The police are investigating the incident as a suspected murder-suicide, according to Indian media reports.

The deceased have been identified as Anup Kumar (38), his wife Rakhi (35), their 5-year-old daughter Anupriya, and their 2-year-old son Priyansh, NDTV reported.

Originally from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, the family had been residing in Bengaluru for Anup Kumar’s job as a software consultant at a private firm.

The incident came to light on Monday when the family’s house help arrived for work but received no response from inside. She alerted neighbors, who then informed the police. Upon entering the house, authorities found the bodies of the couple and their children.

An initial investigation revealed that Anup and Rakhi had allegedly poisoned their children before taking their own lives by hanging, as reported by news agency IANS.

Police suspect emotional distress as a possible motive, citing the couple’s reported struggles related to their elder child’s health.

Anupriya, the couple’s 5-year-old daughter, was a child with special needs. Their house help noted that the parents appeared to be under stress but had not shown signs of such drastic intentions. The family had seemed happy recently and had even planned a trip to Pondicherry, with packing reportedly completed on Sunday.

The family employed three individuals — two cooks and one caregiver for their children — each earning Rs15,000 per month.

No suicide note has been found at the scene so far. Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation.
