At least five passengers are feared dead and several others injured after falling from an overcrowded local train travelling from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Kasara on Sunday, NDTV reported.

The incident occurred near Mumbra station in Thane district, where 10 to 12 commuters reportedly fell from a packed compartment.

According to Indian Railways, the tragedy was triggered by severe overcrowding. Many passengers were hanging onto the doors due to lack of space inside the train, a common and dangerous occurrence during peak travel hours.

Emergency teams, including railway officials and local police, rushed to the scene. The injured have been transported to Shivaji Hospital and Thane General Hospital for treatment. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall.

In response to the incident, the Railways announced immediate safety upgrades. All rakes currently under production for the Mumbai Suburban Railway will be equipped with automatic door-closing systems. Existing rakes in operation will also be retrofitted with similar features to prevent future mishaps.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed condolences and confirmed fatalities, though an official death toll is still being verified. “The incident of eight passengers falling between Diva and Mumbra and the death of some is very unfortunate. We mourn their loss and pray for the swift recovery of the injured,” he said in a statement.

Fadnavis added that the local administration is coordinating relief efforts and that the Railways is investigating the cause.
