Six victims were in critical condition, while five others remained in serious condition
At least 11 people were injured in a mass stabbing at a Walmart store in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday. Police said the attack appeared to be random, with no indication that the victims were targeted.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea confirmed the suspect—a Michigan resident—is in custody and is believed to have acted alone.
“Based on the information that we have at this time, it appears they were random acts,” Shea said at a press conference. “The victims were not predetermined.”
According to a statement from Munson Healthcare, six victims were in critical condition, while five others were reported to be in serious condition. Local media said three people were undergoing surgery as of Saturday evening.
The victims include six men and five women.
Eyewitness Julia Martell, 30, told The New York Times she heard screams and saw a man running with a knife through the pharmacy section.
“He was shoving and stabbing people as he moved through the store,” she said.“There was blood everywhere.”
Authorities believe the attack began near the store's checkout area.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her condolences in a post on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a “brutal act of violence.”
“Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this horrible news,” she said.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that federal agents are supporting the local investigation.
Traverse City, located on the shores of Lake Michigan, is a well-known tourist destination. Sheriff Shea noted that such violence is rare in the area.
“It is very uncommon for our area,” he said.
