A heartwarming viral video featuring a young boy from Kerala, Thrajul S. Sankar, has captured widespread attention. In the video, Thrajul politely tells his mother that he would prefer chicken biryani over the usual upma served at the local Anganwadi (state run play school) sparking both laughter and reflection. Veena George, Kerala's Minister of Health, Women, and Child Welfare, shared the video on her Facebook page, where it quickly gained even more traction.
In response to Thrajul's innocent yet candid request, the Kerala government has decided to review the menus at Anganwadis across the state, aiming to incorporate a wider variety of nutritious foods for young children. This initiative aligns with the state's ongoing efforts to improve its Anganwadi system. In 2022, Kerala introduced milk and eggs in the meals served at around 33,000 Anganwadis, and now, the government is working to upgrade these facilities into modern, well-equipped spaces. These upgrades include enhanced kitchens, study rooms, play areas, and even gardens, ensuring children access a more holistic environment.
In addition to improving the physical spaces and menu options, the state has also addressed the welfare of Anganwadi workers—95% of whom are women—by revising their pay and acknowledging their vital role in shaping the future of Kerala's youngest citizens.
