The UAE has denounced the explosion that occurred on Thursday in the old Al Azhar area in Cairo.

President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan yesterday phoned Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and expressed the UAE's condemnation of the blast.

A previously unknown Islamist group said it was behind the bombing which killed three people, including two Western tourists.

The group calling itself the Islamic Pride Brigades said one of its militants carried out the bombing, which it said was a suicide attack to protest against Mubarak's government and the US policies in the region.
