Abu Dhabi: The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), has converted Bus Service No. 65 into an eco-friendly service.
The route is now operated entirely by green buses powered by advanced hydrogen and electric technologies. This initiative contributes to reducing Abu Dhabi Mobility’s environmental footprint, cutting carbon emissions, and setting a new benchmark for sustainable urban mobility in the emirate.
The transition is part of Abu Dhabi Mobility’s ambitious strategic plan to transform Abu Dhabi Island into a Public Transport Green Zone by 2030. The plan aims to decarbonise the city’s public transport network by converting 50 per cent of buses to green alternatives. This initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 200 tonnes per day, equivalent to removing 14,700 cars from the roads. It underscores Abu Dhabi Mobility’s continued commitment to implementing sustainable environmental solutions and reducing emissions across the emirate.
Bus Service No. 65, now fully operated by green buses, serves one of the busiest routes on Abu Dhabi Island. Connecting Marina Mall to Al Reem Island, the service accommodates approximately 6,000 passengers daily, covering over 2,000 km per day. The transition to green buses ensures that a large number of commuters benefit from environmentally friendly transport while maintaining comfort and efficiency.
As part of its ongoing sustainability efforts, Abu Dhabi Mobility is expanding the use of green buses to additional routes, including Route 160 (Capital Park to Khalifa City) and Route A2 (Abu Dhabi City to Zayed International Airport). These routes are integral to an innovative transport strategy designed to enhance the public transport experience in Abu Dhabi.
The green buses utilise cutting-edge battery technology and hydrogen fuel cells to achieve zero-emission operations, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and overall energy consumption. By leveraging these advanced technologies, the initiative demonstrates how innovation in public transport can contribute to ambitious environmental goals.
To further enhance passenger experience and optimise operational performance, Abu Dhabi Mobility continuously evaluates service efficiency through onboard surveys and advanced monitoring systems. These efforts help improve service quality, increase user satisfaction, foster community engagement, and assess the impact of sustainable transport initiatives in alignment with Abu Dhabi’s strategic and environmental objectives.
The transition of Bus Service No. 65 to green buses marks a major milestone in Abu Dhabi’s journey toward environmental sustainability. This initiative, highlighted at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit, supports the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategy by advancing zero-emission transport solutions. Moreover, it reinforces Abu Dhabi’s leadership in adopting innovative, eco-friendly technologies in public transport, contributing to the emirate’s sustainable development goals and enhancing overall quality of life.
