Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with Keolis MHI, the operator and maintainer of Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram, has introduced drone technology to clean the facades of metro and tram stations across the city.

The initiative marks a major shift from traditional cleaning methods, which typically require up to 15 workers per station. By contrast, the drone-based approach operates with a streamlined team of just eight, reducing manpower requirements by more than 50% while significantly enhancing worker safety by minimising exposure to high-risk environments.

“This pilot initiative reflects RTA’s commitment to adopting innovative technologies that enhance safety, optimise resources, and support Dubai’s sustainability goals,” said Mohammed Al Ameeri, Director of Maintenance at RTA’s Rail Agency.

“Trialing drone-based façade cleaning is a step toward smarter maintenance practices that reduce environmental impact and safeguard worker well-being,” he added.

Benefits

Al Ameeri also highlighted the environmental benefits of the new system: “The drones use less water per station, contributing meaningfully to our green strategy. Our partnership with Keolis MHI is helping drive the development of automated solutions that enable safer, more sustainable infrastructure maintenance.”

Initial results from the trial have been promising, with drones delivering valuable efficiency gains. While conventional methods remain better suited for intricate detailing, the drone approach offers a strong foundation for a future hybrid model — blending the strengths of both systems to maximise performance, sustainability, and operational effectiveness.

Smart city

Vikas Sardana, Chief Operating Officer at Keolis MHI, said: “We are proud to support RTA’s strategic vision and Dubai’s transformation into a smart, sustainable city. This trial embodies our belief that innovation starts with curiosity and courage.”

He added: “This initiative aligns closely with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Smart Dubai initiative. It reflects our commitment to shaping the future of urban mobility through bold, sustainable innovation.”
