Reckless driving and speeding claimed one more young life here when two Omani students from Fanja met with an unusual road accident in which the driver of a Mercedes was thrown out before the vehicle caught fire.

Twenty-two-year-old Fatih bin Jumah Nasser Al Hadabi was hurled 30 metres to his death when he rammed into a concrete barrier at a high speed on a flyover in Muscat. The co-driver Idris Hamad Abdullah Al Hadabi suffered burn injuries.

The two were travelling from Muscat towards their hometown Fanja when the mishap occurred on the new Qamaat fly over in Bid Bid wilayat.

The deceased was a student at the Sultan Qaboos University while the other passenger in the car Idris was a student at a university in India and was here in Oman to spend the fasting month Ramadan with his family.

It appears that the driver lost the control of the vehicle and hit the concrete barrier, also known as New Jersey barriers, at a high speed. Fatih died on the spot as impact of the accident hurled him out of the car and he fell down on the road, some 30 metres below the fly over.

Idris received burn injuries even as he tried to escape from the burning car. He was rushed to the Ministry of Defence Hospital in Al Khodh area, where he is reported to be out of danger.

The car was completely gutted. The ROP sources blamed speeding and recklessness for the cause of the accident.
