The General Secretariat of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences has announced the third award topics for 2003-04.

The award will include three categories, International Awards, Arab World Awards and UAE Awards. Ahmed Al Hashemi, Director of Dubai Medical District and member of the general secretariat of the award, said the International Awards will be divided into three categories.

"The first is Grand Hamdan International Award in the field of Renal Diseases (Pathogenesis and Management) with a prize amounting to $80,000," he said

The second category is Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence with a prize money totalling $81,000, which will be divided equally among three winners, each receiving $27,000.

This award will be divided into three categories, Emerging Viral and Prion Disease, Minimal Invasive Surgery Technology and Preventive and non-Invasive Therapy of Gastrointestinal Disorders.

The third category will be Hamdan Award for Volunteers in Humanitarian Medical Services. "The prize amount is $72,000 to be awarded to four winners, each receiving $18,000," he said.

According to him, the Arab World Awards will have only one category.

"Hamdan Award for the Best Medical College/Institute or Centre in the Arab World will have a prize amount of $300,000 to be awarded equally to two institution from the Arab World," he said.

According to Al Hashemi, the UAE awards will be divided into three categories.

"The first is Hamdan Award for Original Research Papers Published in Emirates Medical Journal from inside and outside the UAE. The prize amount is Dh100,000 to be awarded to four papers each receiving Dh25,000.

"The second is Hamdan Award for honouring the individuals working in the field of medicine and health, with prize amount of Dh250,000 to be equally awarded to four individuals," he said.

The third is Hamdan Award to Support Medicine Research in UAE. The selected topics are nutrition, trauma and public health issues.

"Research work related to other medical topics relevant to the UAE will also be funded. A total sum of Dh1.7 million is allocated for the above-mentioned projects," he said.

The last date for receiving the nominations is on or before December 31, 2003. Original research papers must be published in Emirates Medical Journal between August 2002 and December 2003.
