Doctors in Ras Al Khaimah operate on baby girl to remove bread piece from lung

Ras Al Khaimah: A baby girl had to undergo a life-saving surgery on Sunday after a piece of bread caught stuck in her left lung.

The condition of the nine-month-old Indian girl, Alfina Roy, deteriorated after her father tried to save the child by pulling the bread piece with his fingers, forcing the bread piece to sink in further.

The child could barely breathe and the Indian family had to take the infant to Saqr Hospital. A team of doctors, led by Dr Magdi Thaqeb, Consultant E.N.T Surgeon, decided to operate on the child. A team of three anesthetists assisted the extremely-risky surgery.

Dr Thaqeb said it was a risky operation as the foreign body ended up in the lung of the infant and that the family took a long time to bring the child to the hospital.

The doctor said that the father acted in a wrong way when he saw the bead in the infant's mouth: he tried to remove it with his fingers and the infant inhaled the bead piece, which landed in her lung.

Dr Thaqeb said the child could not breathe normally and the air was trapped in her left lung, which put the life of the infant in real danger.

He said the condition of Alfina is now fine and that she will soon be discharged from hospital.
