Ras Al Khaimah: The Anti-Narcotics Department of Ras Al Khaimah Police carried out 33 anti-drug operations during the first quarter of this year, according to statistics released by Ras Al Khaimah Police on Sunday.

The number of operations increased by 83 per cent compared with 18 anti-drug operations in the same period last year.

Colonel Ebrahim Kaptan, head of the Department, said the department, in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, has a goal to fight the trafficking of narcotics and psychotropic substances.

Colonel Kaptan pointed out that drugs have a direct impact on the human mind, citing the need to focus on the 14-30 age group to make them aware of the consequences of addiction.

Police found during routine inspections that a number of shops were promoting or selling drugs through printed phrases on T-shirts and notified the authorities in the emirate to intervene, Col Kaptan said.

Major General Ali Abdullah Bin Alwan, Commander-in-Chief of Ras Al Khaimah Police, lauded the cooperation of police departments in the country.

The renewed war on drugs in schools, on streets and in public places is more important than ever, he added.

Despite the high-tech methods used by traffickers, the drug problem is under control, he said.

He said the authorities were doing their best to prevent youth from falling prey to drug traders.

Maj Gen Al Nuaimi said the family played an important role in preventing drug abuse among younger people, and stressed it was important to report addicted children to authorities for rehabilitation and treatment.

He said police are working round the clock to keep youngsters safe from traffickers.
