Pregnant woman, partner on trial in Dubai

Dubai: A man and a woman landed in court on Monday after the woman was rushed to hospital suffering from severe abdominal pain due to an ectopic pregnancy.

Doctors informed the 28-year-old Filipina that she was two months pregnant. She said she had a one-time sexual encounter in her 30-year-old Indian partner's car at Jumeirah Open Beach.

After the Filipina revealed that she was not married and that she had conceived out of wedlock, the hospital management informed the police.

Police referred the man and woman to the General Prosecution where they were charged with having consensual sex. When they appeared before the Dubai Misdemeanour Court, they confessed to their charges and pleaded guilty.

"We had consensual sex … Sir, we already got married," the man told Presiding Judge Wajdi Al Minyawi.

"Yes I allowed him to sleep with me," the Filipina told the court. Judge Al Minyawi asked the couple, who are on bail, "What took you so long to get married? What are your religions?"

Severe pain

The man told the court that he was a Muslim and the girl said she was a Christian. "Sir, we ask the court to adjourn the case and give us some time to present our marriage certificate," the man told the court.

Prosecution records said the Filipina was rushed to a public hospital in Dubai suffering from severe abdominal pain. When the woman was admitted for emergency treatment, she was not aware she was pregnant.

After a quick check-up, the doctor informed her that she was two months pregnant and that her pregnancy was ectopic. [In such a pregnancy, the embryo implants outside the uterine cavity].

Operation

Doctors informed her that an ectopic pregnancy is life-threatening as it could cause internal bleeding. She was told that she needed an urgent operation to save her life.

In her statement before the police, the woman said the Indian used to be her colleague at work.

"We were friends at work. Then we started hanging out and our relationship developed into a love affair. Both of us love each other.

"One weekend, my boyfriend picked me up from home and we went out for a drive. He stopped his car at the beachside … and then we made love in his car. That was the only time. Sometime later when I visited the hospital, doctors told me that I was pregnant," she said.
