Abra-cadabra: water taxis are magic in crossing the creek

Taking a water taxi may be the oldest method of crossing Dubai Creek but it also remains one of the most popular choices for commuters today.

The boats, known as abras, each take around 20 people a time across the creek between Bur Dubai and Deira. And at 50 fils each way, they are a cheap alternative to a taxi which costs at least ten times as much.

The water-taxis add an extra link across the city's creek and are expected to become even more popular.

The abras cross at various points. On the Deira side of the creek, passengers depart and arrive on jetties or directly onto the newly-renovated sea wall.

For many people the creek is the only obstacle between their home and their workplace, so these water taxis are ideal.

"The journey between Deira and Bur Dubai can be a nightmare on the roads, negotiating heavy traffic across Maktoum Bridge and the Shindagha Tunnel," noted one motorist.

"Traffic is only going to get worse so I'm sure more people will choose to cross the creek by boat. I have heard many people say the service has allowed them to find accommodation on the cheaper side of the creek in Deira, even though they work in Bur Dubai." (200x150)01_abra2.jpg (150x200)
