NHL: Predators miss chance to lead Western Conference

Montreal: Montreal’s P.K. Subban scored the overtime winner to give the Canadiens a 2-1 win over Nashville on Tuesday, costing the Predators a chance to take the NHL Western Conference lead as both teams played their last game before the All-Star break.

Subban scored on a power play 4:09 into the extra period for the Canadiens, who made up no ground on the two teams above them in the Atlantic Division — leaders Tampa Bay beat Vancouver to go top of the Eastern Conference and Detroit defeated Minnesota in a shoot-out after having given up a three-goal lead.

Montreal’s Alex Galchenyuk also scored, while goaltender Carey Price made 37 saves in his return after two games out injured.

Mike Ribeiro scored for Nashville, who lost back-to-back for the first time this season. The Predators would have moved level with Anaheim for the West lead had they won.

Tampa Bay rose to the top of the East with a 4-1 win against Vancouver — their eighth-straight home win.

Alex Killorn had two goals, Valtteri Filppula added a goal and an assist, and Brian Boyle also scored for the Lightning, who lead the New York Islanders by one point.

The Canucks had to wait until 8”09 of the third period to score through Frank Corrado.

Detroit overcame a shaky finish to beat Minnesota 5-4, with Gustav Nyqust and Pavel Datsyuk scoring in the shoot-out.

The Red Wings had one just once in eight previous shoot-outs this season, but came away with their fifth consecutive victory overall. Nyquist also scored in regulation, but the Red Wings blew a 4-1 lead in the third.

Zach Parise scored twice for Minnesota, but missed his attempt starting the shoot-out. Mikko Koivu, who also scored in regulation, had his shoot-out attempt stopped.

Boston goalie Tuukka Rask made 36 saves to help the Bruins win 3-1 at Dallas.

Rask allowed the game’s first goal by Vernon Fiddler in the second but Loui Eriksson tied it for the Bruins and they went ahead through Gregory Campbell.

Dougie Hamilton capped the win in a third-period power play.

The Stars failed to score on any of their six power plays. They are 3 for 37 over the past nine games.

Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux scored 3:57 into overtime to give the Flyers a 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh in a fight-filled game between the fierce rivals which had one ejection and 93 penalty minutes.

New York’s Carl Hagelin deflected in Derek Stepan’s slick backhand pass in overtime to complete the Rangers’ come-from-behind 3-2 win against Ottawa.

Chicago’s Andrew Shaw broke out of a scoring slump with two goals as the Blackhawks routed Arizona 6-1.

Edmonton’s Teddy Purcell scored the decisive goal in a shoot-out as the Oilers won against the odds at Washington, coming from two goals down late in regulation and ending the Capitals’ run of seven-straight home wins.
