29-year-old shows his dominance in field with wire-to-wire victory for second crown

Jordan Smith of England shot a final round of eight under par 63 for a 72-hole total of 30 under par for a wire-to-wire victory in the $2 million Portugal Masters at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course, Vilamoura, Portugal.
Smith’s round, starting on hole one with a two-shot over night third round lead, opened up with an outward half of 31. His back nine started with a birdie on 10, followed by further birdies on 12, 15 and 17.
This was the 29 year-old’s second DP World Tour career title to add to his Porsche European Open win in 2017 and his Challenge Tour win in the Ras Al Khaimah 2016 Challenge Tour at Al Hamra Golf Club, Ras Al Khaimah, UAE.
Smith had a three-shot win over playing partner Gavin Green of Malaysia, who shot a final round of 64, his second runners-up spot of the 2021-2022 DP World Tour season.
A summary of Smith’s statistics for the week show his dominance against the field: 27 birdies and three eagles.
One of the performances of the week came from former Emirates Golf Club junior member, 34 year-old German Sebastian Heisele with a tied fifth place finish on 19 under par for his 72 holes. This is Heisele’s final round on Tour as he pursues a golf coaching career, having just obtained his teaching certificates.
With this win Smith moves up five spots to No 9 in the DP World Tour Rankings.
Other ‘Movers and Shakers’ this week on the DP World Tour Rankings came from Green, up 34 spots to 42, Tapio Pulkkanen (Finland) up 23 to 51, Eddie Pepperell (England) up 7 to 41 and Hurly Long (Germany) up 3 places to 22.
The next event on the DP World Tour is the $6 million Nedbank Golf Challenge at the Gary Player CC, Sun City, South Africa, to be held from November 10-13, the week prior to the season ending $10 million DP World Tour Championship to be held on Earth course, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai, from November 17-20.
