Well, I managed to survive my full-time debut in the dugout! It was made so much easier by the fact that our Kolkata Knight Riders produced a superb performance against the Mumbai Indians in the tournament opener to win relatively comfortably.
The dugout is a lot easier on the body than playing but just as stressful. I’ve been laughing at coaches for over 20 years when they get wound up by the tension of the game and become frustrated. Now I have an understanding of what they go through. At least when you are playing you feel like you can change things and make a difference — but that’s not really possible when you’re sitting on your backside watching from the sidelines.
It’s very early days but I’m thoroughly enjoying my new role as part of the backroom staff. It’s very satisfying being able to pass on some of the knowledge I’ve gathered over the years. It would be a shame if it went to waste!
Trevor Bayliss is very calm and laid back, which is an extremely important part of being a head coach. He has other members of his team to do the jumping up and down. He creates an excellent environment for players to perform in and he keeps things simple.
It’s important to discuss strategy and to have various plans for different opponents, and cricket is certainly a sport in which technique is important. But, as deep as you go into tactics and technique, it’s vital to remind yourself that cricket is actually quite a straightforward game.
Gautam Gambhir once again showed his class against Mumbai. He refused to panic after making a slow start and then kept things together during the run chase with a beautifully paced innings. He is now, in my opinion, one of the most valuable cricketers in the IPL.
Apart from the professionalism of the franchise and the warmth of the hospitality they provide, there are two reasons to be especially pleased with being a Kolkata Knight Rider. The first is Royal Calcutta Golf Club, and the second is Eden Gardens.
I love the golf course and it was fabulous to be back there once again earlier this week. I am inspired by watching the first round of the Masters and would love to think I’ll be able to fit a couple more rounds in between matches, travelling and practice sessions.
And, whether playing or watching, it’s always impressive to be in a packed Eden Gardens. It is one of the most iconic stadiums in the world and will never lose its aura.
