Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Krunal Pandya believes bowlers, especially spinners, must keep finding new ways to stay relevant as batting continues to dominate the shortest format of the game.

His comments came after RCB’s five-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026 on Friday, a match that once again underlined how quickly big targets can be chased down.

‘Batters are always one step ahead’

Speaking on JioHotstar after the match, Krunal said modern batters are expanding their range so quickly that bowlers are often left searching for answers.

“Every year, batting keeps improving at a fast pace,” he said. “At times, when you are about to bowl, you wonder where to pitch it because batters can hit almost anywhere.”

The experienced all-rounder explained that this shift has forced him to rethink his own approach. Rather than relying on familiar methods, he has tried to stay ahead by adding new variations and changing his angles.

New variations making a difference

This season, Krunal has experimented more with his bowling, including using bouncers and round-arm deliveries to unsettle batters. The changes have helped him stay competitive in a format that often favours aggressive stroke play.

He said innovation is no longer optional for bowlers. “It’s about finding ways to stay one step ahead. Why should fast bowlers have all the fun? Spinners can try different things too,” he added with a smile.

Krunal also noted that once a new idea works, it quickly spreads across teams. “If something clicks, others will try it as well. That’s how the game keeps moving forward,” he said.

Backing from support staff

The 33-year-old credited RCB’s spin-bowling coach Malolan Rangarajan for giving him the freedom to experiment and grow.

“He has backed me and allowed me to try new things. That kind of support builds confidence,” Krunal said, adding that he came into the season with a clear aim of improving his skill set after a strong previous year.

Focus on performance, not selection

Looking ahead, Krunal said returning to the Indian team remains a personal goal, but he is not dwelling on selection.

“There’s nothing bigger than playing for India again,” he said. “But what matters is what I can control - performing consistently and helping my team win.”

He added that handling pressure has become easier with experience, both on and off the field. “Cricket teaches you a lot about life. I just try to keep improving, and that reflects in how I play,” he said.
