Photos: When residents of Dubai, Sharjah, and the UAE marvel at the first Supermoon of the year

A stunning celestial display on Monday as the first Supermoon of the year graced the night sky in the UAE and around the world.

The blue or sturgeon Supermoon appeared larger and brighter due to the full Moon's closer proximity to Earth.

The supermoon is seen from the Abu Dhabi Corniche.

"Early Native American tribes knew this full Moon as the Sturgeon Moon," Dubai Astronomy Group said. The story goes that the tribes gave the Supermoon this name after the large fish caught easily at this time of the year in the Great Lakes and other water bodies in the northeastern part of the US (NASA). A supermoon occurs in about 25% of lunar cycles, while a total lunar eclipse occurs in about 5%. According to NASA, "The term Supermoon was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 as either a new or full Moon that occurs when the Moon is within 90 per cent of its closest approach to Earth. Since we don't see new moons, full supermoons, which are the most significant and brightest full moons of the year, have caught the public's attention.

This will be the first of four consecutive Supermoons this year (with the full Moons in September and October virtually tied for the closest of the year)."
