In Pictures: With iPhone 14, Apple makes connectivity matter in emergencies

The iPhone 14 packs in the by now expected advances on form and features, but there are two add-ons that catch the eye with the latest Apple product. That would be the satellite link-up for emergencies and car crash detection.

On the first – an SOS message via satellite – it allows antennas to connect directly to a satellite, thus allowing that critical messaging to get through to emergency services when outside of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

With the SOS feature, the iPhone 14 can assess the user’s situation and shows them where to point the handset to connect to a satellite. The initial questionnaire and follow-up messages are then relayed to centres staffed by Apple-trained professionals who can call for help on the user’s behalf. This technology also allows users to manually share their location over a satellite when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi connection.

Then there’s the crash detection feature. A new dual-core accelerometer is capable of detecting G-force measurements, empowering the iPhone to detect a major car crash and automatically dial emergency services when a user is unconscious or unable to reach their phone. This builds on existing components, like the barometer, which can detect cabin pressure changes, a GPS for additional inputs on changes to speed, and the microphone, which can recognize loud noises typified by severe car crashes.

When a severe crash is detected, an emergency services call interface will appear on Apple Watch, as the device is most likely to be in closer proximity to the user. The call is then placed through the iPhone if it is in range for the best possible connection.

Available in 6.1-inch and new 6.7-inch sizes, The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max come in deep purple, silver, gold, and space black in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage capacities.

Pre-booking begin at 4pm UAE time on September 9, with availability from September 16.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will be available in midnight, blue, starlight, purple, and Red in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage capacities. Pre-orders will begin at 4pm UAE time on September 9, with iPhone 14 availability starting September 16 and iPhone 14 Plus from October 7.

Customers can get the iPhone 14 for Dh3,399 before trade-in, and iPhone 14 Plus for Dh3,799 from Apple Store.

So, what else is different with the latest launch? The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max retain the look and feel of the previous model. But there is one more addition – the ‘Dynamic Island’ - that should go down well with iPhone’s committed fan base.

Dynamic Island is a new design that can in real-time show important alerts, notifications, and activities. With the new feature, the truedepth camera has been redesigned to take up less of the display area. Dynamic Island maintains an active state to allow users easier access to controls with a simple tap-and-hold.

Powered by A16 Bionic, the fastest chip in a smartphone to date, the iPhone 14 Pro introduces a new set of camera detailing, with the first-ever 48 MP main camera featuring a quad-pixel sensor and a photonic engine, which improves low-light photos.

Additional system upgrades include a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, an improved telephoto camera, a front true-depth camera, and adaptive true tone flash.

A new action mode for a smooth-looking video helps adjust to significant shakes, even when the video is being captured in the middle of the action.
