From the Editors: Chennai Super Kings win IPL but what’s next for Dhoni?

FOR THE TALIBAN, DAESH IS A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER: Another Friday, another horrific bombing in a Shiite mosque in Afghanistan. On October 8, a suicide bomber killed dozens in Kunduz, and yesterday another killed dozens in Kandahar. In both cases, Daesh’s Afghan affiliate claimed responsibility. These criminal actions constitute a real threat not only to Afghanistan, but even more so to the Taliban. Their government is very young but it has struggled to uphold one key aspect of their rule: security. The Taliban also have another big problem: Analysts have long suspected and the Taliban have now admitted that there could well be a Daesh penetration of their own ranks. They have vowed to weed out these elements and to destroy Daesh in Afghanistan. But, currently, things on the security front do not look promising. [COMMENT BY: Omar Shariff, International Editor]

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS WIN IPL BUT WHAT'S NEXT FOR DHONI?: Chennai Super Kings were crowned Indian Premier League champions for the fourth time after they beat Kolkata Knight Riders last night at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium by 27 runs in the final. Following the impressive victory, the attention has now turned to their instrumental captain MS Dhoni. The 40-year-old has led the team to all of their trophy wins since the competition launched in 2008 but many believe now is the time for him to step down and be replaced with a younger player as captain. But others feel he still has plenty left in the tank and can continue to the lead the team for several more years. He has played the most IPL matches than any other player (230) and is eighth in the list of highest run-scorers (4,746). With two new franchises to be added for the new 2022 IPL season, Dhoni said Chennai’s future is more important than his own. “We have to decide what is good for CSK - it's not about me being there in the three or four retained players. It's about making a strong core to ensure the franchise doesn't suffer. We have to see who can contribute for the next 10 years,” he said. [COMMENT BY: Imran Malik, Assistant Editor]

CAN BOLLYWOOD HIT THE BRAKES ON REBOOTS AND SEQUELS: The rumours alas are true. A sequel to ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ is officially in the works with Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel reuniting for the project 20 years after the original broke box office records with its cross-border love story. While the film earned accolades and money, despite the heavy dose of jingoism, was it really necessary to revisit this modern-day classic? ‘Gadar 2’ isn’t the only film guilty of attempting to capitalise on its previously garnered fame and fortune. Kartik Aaryan’s ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ is eager to cash in on the craze the 2007 horror-comedy triggered with the help of lead star Akshay Kumar. Also in the pipeline is John Abraham who is bringing a sequel to his 2018 hit ‘Satyameva Jayate’ to cinemas later this year.
