While the first few cases of diabetes were recorded in the first century AD, it took until 1922 to formulate a solution (synthetic insulin).

World Diabetes Day (celebrated today) was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organisation to generate awareness of the virulent disease. It marks the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, conceived the idea that led to the discovery of insulin.

World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2007. This year’s theme in the UAE is Diabetes Education and Prevention. GN Focus highlights some of the initiatives:

Disease prevention workshops by Dubai Health Authority (DHA)
Walk for Life campaign
Third regional conference for diabetes and obesity
Fifth annual Beat Diabetes walkathon
Full Moon Yoga and Meditation session
