The 13th edition of the Dubai International Film Festival (Diff) is offering a first-of-its-kind experience in the region — you can watch films in virtual mode. To indulge movie fanatics and allow them a new way to experience the art of storytelling, narrative structure and cinematography, Diff has introduced the latest in virtual reality (VR) to the mix, with a segment branded “Different Reality”.

It is fascinating to note that VR was invented a long time ago.In the 19th century, paintings were used to create a visual illusion for viewers to make them feel physically present in a place where they were not. Today, VR, as we know it, has evolved.

Diff’s Artistic Director, Masoud Amralla Al Ali, said the latest trend is an exciting addition to the festival and the future of film.

“Virtual Reality is the big thing happening right now at Diff. We, as leaders, thought to experiment with this new revolution, which is just the beginning. This is a new approach to look into cinematography and a new approach towards filmmaking.”

He said the UAE is gearing up to do something different, show reality with an all-new perspective.

Earlier, directors thought that digital would kill traditional filmmaking with superficial effects, but it has enhanced film into a realistic cinematic experience.

“Ten years back, we had directors placing the camera in a certain position, working on the right angles and lighting, but now we have a wide open frame — which adds more room for creativity. This is something that gives the viewers a touch of human experience,” he said enthusiastically.

— The Young Journalist Award (YJA) programme at Diff is a training programme for high school students who are aspiring writers and reporters. Eight students are competing at the festival this year between December 7-14. One winner will secure a monthlong internship with Gulf News.
