Students experience wheelchair challenges
Sharjah A group of third-year architecture students from the School of Architecture and Design at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) temporarily used wheelchairs and apparatus to simulate blindness and/or deafness while navigating their campus recently. The exercise was meant to provide a practical lesson on how to incorporate the needs of physically and sensory challenged people in their designs. The project was initiated by Ginger Krieg Doiser, assistant professor of architecture.
Mobile health clinic goes into the community
Sharjah The Sharjah Women's College Mobile Health Van drove out of campus last week as part of a community health initiative to provide schoolchildren lessons on personal hygiene, dental health, H1N1 awareness, anaemia, diabetes and good nutrition. This year students have planned a detailed programme of workshops supplemented with basic tests that include blood glucose, haemoglobin and BMI measurements.
Paramedic students undergo training
Abu Dhabi Sixteen students from the Abu Dhabi Police Ambulance have returned to Abu Dhabi Men's College for their second year of studies in the paramedic programme. This follows their qualification as Emergency Medical Technicians with the Pennsylvania Department of Health in the US. The students are undertaking a three-year Higher Diploma in Paramedic Studies in conjunction with Harrisburg Area Community College in Pennsylvania.
AUS alumni honoured at Cityscape Dubai
Sharjah Four graduates of the School of Architecture and Design at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) were named joint winners of the Young Architect Award at the 2009 Cityscape Awards for Architecture in Emerging Markets held earlier this month in Dubai.The class of 2009 winners are Momna Arshad, Reihaneh Ramezany Mahonaky, Tahereh Rajabi and Ahmad Hosny.
