Hollywood’s favourite Matt Groening impersonator, Seth MacFarlane, is going Stone Age with a 2013 reboot of The Flintstones set to join the Fox line up. According to MacFarlane, the chance to rock out with Fred and Barney represents a childhood dream come true, with the animator revealing, "One of the first things that I drew when I was two years old was Fred Flintstone.”

While it’s unclear exactly how faithful the new series will be to the original which, by the way, has already been hacked up and repackaged in all manner of shoddy ways over the years, MacFarlane hinted that the update will be largely referential. "What's the animal version of the iPod?" he said. "That's the kind of thing we have to think about."

Meanwhile Flintstone super fans (Flinstoners?) are coming out of the woods online to denounce the desecration of the cartoon world’s First Family. But here’s something they might not know; before he created Family Guy, American Dad, and his many other shows, MacFarlane was on staff at Hanna-Barbera, the studio that laid down the bedrock in, er, Bedrock.

It’s hard to say when the new Flinstones show will hit our sandy shores here in the UAE, but we have to ask; is this idea cracked?
