A Haunting in Venice (UAE Cinemas): Agatha Christie. Hercule Poirot. Kenneth Branagh. Michelle Yeoh. Kelly Reilly. Murder and mystery. What’s there not to like? Based on a 1969 Christie novel and directed by Branagh, 'A Haunting In Venice' sees Branagh return as the famed detective Poirot for the third time. This time, he must solve the year-old murder of a guest at Venice séance, and he is accompanied by a phalanx of actors, including Kyle Allen, Camille Cottin, Jamie Dorman, Tina Fey and Jude Hill. Go for it if you’re a fan of Christie and her style of intricate writing, not to mention mystery and thrills. Fun fact: this movie is a sequel to Branagh’s 'Death On The Nile', also based on an Agatha Christie novel.

Jawan (UAE cinemas): This star-studded action spectacle, led by Shah Rukh Khan and directed by Atlee, is enjoying a bullish run at the box-office. Smashing several records, this film has surpassed Rs4billion mark and is fast becoming a cultural juggernaut. Khan plays dual roles of father and son in this vigilante thriller that’s snappy and filled with star power. The actor takes on the establishment and prods civilians in a democracy to demand answers from their chosen political leaders. But the messaging doesn’t get in the way of telling a good story. While a few plot twists will demand suspension of belief, there’s no scarcity for entertainment. Loud explosions, car chases, dazzling dance-song sequences, and stylized actors make this a fun watch. Catch this film on the big screens before it heads to smaller screens.

Love At First Sight (Netflix): Its title will give you broad hint on what this romantic comedy is all about. Starring Haley Lu Richardson and Ben Hardy, this love story begins where most romantic comedies begin – on a chance encounter at a busy airport. They feel an instant connection during their journey on air, but things go wonky when they land. Based on the wildly popular novel, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, by Jennifer E Smith, this film which premiered on September 15 feels like a keeper. What’s not to love about two strangers meeting during a flight and sparks of the good kind fly between two good-looking and endearing leads.

Kasargold (UAE cinemas): Starring Asif Ali, Sunny Wayne, and Vinayakan, this stylized thriller in Malayalam language is about a bunch of young men who embark on this dangerous route of getting super rich quick. Their means to their end to become wealthy in a snap are mighty questionable. As Ali’s character declares: there’s always a crime behind every fortune, and this film chronicles their desperate attempts to make it big in life.

The Equalizer 3 (UAE Cinemas) Denzel Washington’s turn as Robert McCall, a former US Marine-turned-saviour, in the first two instalments of ‘The Equalizer’ franchise, didn’t disappoint us one bit; neither does the third. His calm demeanour and ability to kill a battalion with just his fists in a methodical manner was more brain than brawn and that keeps you riveted. In part one he set out to dismantle a mob for harming one of his acquaintances, a teenager who dreams of becoming a singer. The second instalment put him on the path to revenge after one of his close associates was murdered. In the third, McCall turns saviour to an Italian village that is on the verge of being overrun by the Mafia. Starring Dakota Fanning and David Dennan, Antoine Fuqua’s ‘The Equalizer 3’ serves up action and thrills in a time-tested but winning formula.

Mark Antony (UAE Cinemas) Going by its trailer, ‘Mark Antony’ is a gangster drama featuring time travel, the 1980s, rotary dial phones and yes, fights. Vishal Krishna and director-turned-actor SJ Suryah ham it up with dual roles in the lead, and are backed by a galaxy of stars, including Telugu star Suneel, Selvaraghavan (you know him better as actor Dhanush’s brother) and Ritu Varma. Suryah is back to what he’s been excelling at of late — as the antagonist — in a movie directed by Adhik Ravichandran (of Trisha Illena Nayanthara fame) that features a peppy background score by GV Prakash Kumar. Expect a man going back to the past to save his estranged mother, machetes and blood, Suryah’s wry humour, and the yesteryear siren Silk Smitha — reportedly brought back to life with help from the wonders of make-up and computer graphics.

One Piece (Netflix) One Piece is a fantasy adventure adaptation of the 1997 Manga series by Eiichiro Oda and it’s trending on Netflix right now. The series follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates in search of "One Piece", a fabled treasure that will make their captain, Monkey D Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), king of the Pirates. However, they are not the only ones and thus, begin the adventures. Unlike adaptions like ‘Death Note’, ‘One Piece’, developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda for Netflix, seems to have got it right in terms of the performances, visuals and staying true to the original.

How I Met Your Mother (Disney Plus) If you want some easy watching this weekend, hark back to this series that was popular in the last decade and continues to be so on Disney Hotstar. ‘How I Met Your Mother’ was inspired by creators Carter Bays’ and Craig Thomas' idea to "write about our friends and the stupid stuff we did in New York." The result was Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), in 2030, telling his adolescent kids about the events that led him to meet their mother. There’s emotion, there’s comedy, there’s drama… perfect way to put your feet up this weekend.

Ted Lasso (Apple TV+) When Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis), an American football coach, is hired to train an English soccer team, AFC Richmond, the hope is that he will falter and fail – just to get back at the previous owner. Instead, Lasso’s kind and compassionate coaching overcomes his inexperience to produce a heartwarming story with plenty of laughs. The sports comedy-drama, playing on Apple TV+, has won critical acclaim for the performances, humour and the sheer joy that an uplifting tale of compassion and endurance brings. There’s no way your weekend can go wrong with this one.

Special Ops: Lioness (Amazon Prime Video): Special Ops: Lioness: This star-studded thriller series follows agents Joe, Kaitlyn, and Cruz as they embark on a dangerous undercover mission to thwart terrorist attacks. Led by Zoe Saldana, she plays a woman in charge of a military mission that embeds women in the inner circle of terrorist to weed them out. High on stunts and drama, it also stars Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman among other A-listers.
