Airline announces immediate financial aid and fleet-wide safety inspections
Dubai: Air India has announced an interim payment of approximately Dh98,700 (£21,000) each to the families of those who tragically lost their lives and to the sole survivor of the recent aircraft accident.
This immediate financial assistance is intended to help address urgent needs. It comes in addition to an already announced support of approximately Dh400,000 (INR 1 crore) from Tata Sons.
In a statement, an Air India spokesperson conveyed deep sadness, stating, "This loss deeply saddens all of us at Air India. We mourn with the families, loved ones, and everyone affected,” it said. The airline affirmed that its teams are providing care and support during this incredibly difficult time.
Air India is also actively conducting one-time safety checks across its Boeing 787 fleet in response to the incident. These inspections, directed by the Indian aviation regulator (DGCA), are being carried out as the aircraft return to India, before they are cleared for their next operations.
Air India has already completed these safety checks on nine of its Boeing 787 aircraft. It is on track to finish the process for the remaining 24 aircraft within the timeline provided by the regulator.
The airline noted that some of these extensive checks might lead to longer turnaround times and potential delays, particularly on certain long-haul routes, especially those to airports operating curfews.
