Gorpcore has made technical trail shoes an increasingly familiar sight far from the mountains, and Salomon is one of the brands at the centre of the look. Vogue still identifies hiking-inspired performance trainers as a significant sneaker trend in 2026. The Speedcross makes a convincing case because its outdoor credentials are more than styling. Our verdict is that it makes most sense for buyers who want genuine soft ground traction and happen to like the technical aesthetic, rather than someone searching for an ordinary city trainer.

For predominantly pavement based walking, commuting or long indoor days, a road-oriented trainer is likely to provide a more natural underfoot feel. The Speedcross's deep lugs are engineered around trail traction, not smooth urban surfaces.

Gorpcore may be responsible for putting shoes like the Salomon Speedcross into fashion conversations, but the strongest reason to buy this model remains functional. Its deep Mud Contagrip outsole, secure Sensifit upper and Quicklace system form a package designed around grip on soft, loose terrain.

The fashion crossover is useful rather than essential. You can wear the Speedcross around town, and independent reviewers find it comfortable enough for everyday use, but frequent pavement walking does not play to its main strength.
