Spy shots: 2021 Volkswagen Golf R caught fully undisguised

Photos reveal several cues that point to this being the hot 'R' variant of the new Golf

This week, our spy photographer has spotted the next-generation Golf R undergoing winter testing in the Arctic Circle, and that too without any camouflage.

The front fascia on the prototype is different from the one seen in spy shots of the GTI TCR recently, and also looks more aggressive.

The latest set of photos reveal many cues that point to this prototype being none else but the R variant of the eighth-generation Golf.

These hints include quad exhaust tips next to a rear diffuser, and a set of beefy blue brake calipers that are a signature of the Golf R.

Although no details have been divulged yet about the Golf R, it is safe to guess that the turbocharged engine sending power to all four wheels through a dual-clutch gearbox will have an output considerably above the 300 horsepower mark.

There are unconfirmed reports that the Golf R will debut this summer at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. If that doesn’t happen, it’s sure to be launched sometime later this year as a 2021 model.
