Toyota's RAV4 has reached a milestone figure by finding over 10 million homes since its introduction in 1994. After 26 years and five model generations, the RAV4 is selling better than ever; in 2019, it was not only the world’s best-selling SUV – it was also the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. The first generation made its debut in 1994 as the world’s first urban SUV.

In started off as a three-door model with compact proportions with power coming from a 127bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine directed to all four wheels. In 1996 the range was expanded to include a five-door version with the option of front-wheel drive.

Second generation, 2000 – 2006: Constructed on a new platform, both three and five-door versions were slightly longer and two petrol engines were offered - a 121bhp 1.8-litre and 148bhp 2.0-litre.

The all-wheel drive system got a centre limited-slip differential, while customers could specify a Torsen rear differential as a factory option.

Third generation, 2006 – 2012: It got an all-new platform and the three-door body style was discontinued. The five-door grew significantly in size.

With 302 horsepower, the upcoming RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will be the most powerful RAV4 yet. A final thought - it took Toyota 68 years to sell ten million Land Cruisers, but the RAV4 has achieved the same milestone in only 26. You sure love it!
