Plus, why Vic Mensa called XXXTenacion out in his cipher

Cardi B dominated Tuesday night’s BET Hip-Hop Awards, walking away with four awards, including the MVP of the Year. The Get Up 10 singer also performed at the event, which took place in Miami Beach, Florida.

The ceremony is known for its many ciphers — anyone remember Eminem’s headline-grabbing political verse from last year? This year, Erykah Badu and Vic Mensa were among those who delivered freestyle.

Mensa called out late rapper XXXTenacion, who posthumously won Best New Hip-Hop Artist. Mensa rapped, “Your favourite rapper is a domestic abuser,” and later doubled down on his message when he faced backlash, saying he refuses to stay quiet about abuse in hip-hop. Mensa also claimed he did not know X’s grieving mother was in the room.

The Carters (Jay Z and Beyonce) won three awards, including Album of the Year for Everything is Love. Childish Gambino won Best Hip-Hop Video for This is America, Drake won Hot Ticket Performer, Kendrick Lamar won Lyricist of the Year and Pharrell Williams won Producer of the Year.
