In a timely intervention, a doctor at Prime Hospital, not only removed 168 fibroids from the uterus of a 39-year-old patient, but also managed to save the uterus, setting the record for the highest number of fibroids removed from a single uterus in the UAE. The current Guinness World Record for the highest number of fibroids removed stands at 236.

Dr Talakere Usha Kiran, Consultant Gynaecologist operated on a 39-year-old Kenyan woman and extracted 168 fibroids. The size of these fibroids ranged from 1 cm to 12 cm.

Dr Usha Kiran said, "To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest number of fibroids removed reported in the UAE."

What are Fibroids?

These are the most common tumours found in the uterus. Fibroids, although not cancerous, cause troublesome symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pressure, and bloating and may interfere with fertility. Although many non-surgical treatments are available, they do not completely dissolve the fibroids. Dr Usha Kiran, a Level 3/4 Laparoscopic surgeon, said, "due to the innumerable fibroids of various sizes, the laparoscopic approach was not possible in this patient, but we managed to give her a bikini line incision which is also aesthetically appealing.

The two-hour surgery did not require any blood transfusion for the patient despite the large number of fibroids. The best part was the conservation of the patient’s uterus which keeps her options of being a mother intact.

Dr Usha Kiran is a UK-trained Consultant Laparoscopic surgeon who has been practicing in Dubai since 2016 has conducted over 1500 laparoscopic surgeries at Prime Hospital. She said that of late she had observed a higher number of uterine fibroid cases in Dubai in the last six years than in the UK. It is probably due to the different nationality mix of patients in the region, and cautioned all women to undergo general annual health check-ups especially after the age of 40.

Dr Usha Kiran is an experienced laparoscopic surgeon who has done over 1500 laparoscopic surgeries at Prime Hospital. In addition, she is one of the first to introduce Scarless Surgery (vNOTES) in the UAE, and she is currently the only certified ‘Scarless Surgeon’ in the UAE.
