India SADC Trade Commission launched in UAE
The India SADC Trade Commission was officially launched in Abu Dhabi by the India Africa Trade Council, marking a pivotal step in enhancing trade relations between India, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the UAE, and Zimbabwe. The launch coincided with UAE National Day celebrations and was attended by diplomats from the SADC region, alongside officials from Zimbabwe. The current chair of SADC, the Ambassador of Zimbabwe to the UAE, presided over the ceremony.
Vijay Anand, a prominent businessman specializing in IT development and human resources, was appointed Trade Commissioner for the India SADC Trade Commission. In this role, he will spearhead initiatives to strengthen trade and investment ties between SADC countries, Zimbabwe, India, and the UAE. “The Council will leverage the Economic Cooperation Agreement between India and the UAE to support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and create a business-friendly environment,” Anand explained.
The event also saw the launch of the Indian Overseas Business Council in the UAE. Several CEOs and businessmen received Advisory Certificates for their contributions to advancing trade between India, the UAE, and SADC nations.
Zimbabwe, a key player in the SADC region, has emerged as a vital trade partner for the UAE. Bilateral trade between the two nations surpassed US$2 billion in 2024, solidifying the UAE as Zimbabwe’s second-largest trading partner. Ambassador Lovemore Mazemo of Zimbabwe expressed enthusiasm for this growing partnership. “We are excited about Anand’s appointment. Zimbabwean products are entering the UAE market, and we look forward to collaborating on food security and other sectors,” he said.
The expanding trade relationship focuses on agriculture, mining, and energy. Zimbabwean investors are eyeing opportunities in the UAE’s food and agriculture sectors, while Emirati investors have shown strong interest in Zimbabwe’s gold and precious metals industries.
Dr. Asif Iqbal, President of the Indian Economic Trade Organization (IETO), voiced robust support for the trilateral partnership. Similarly, Bency George, Director of the GCC Trade Council, emphasized the importance of fostering sustainable growth across key sectors. “The Trade Council is committed to creating a framework for sustainable growth, collaboration, and trade in key sectors,” he stated.
Anand highlighted the importance of identifying new business partners and alliances. “My goal is to build stronger bilateral relations, focusing on agriculture, food security, and infrastructure,” he said. To further this goal, a delegation from India will visit SADC nations in 2025 to explore opportunities.
Ambassador Mazemo reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening trade ties with the UAE and urged investors to explore the opportunities available. The successful launch of the India SADC Trade Commission signifies the beginning of a new era of collaboration.
