Manama: A Bahraini appeals court has upheld a six-year sentence earlier issued by a lower court against an Asian man caught trying to smuggle drugs in a condom, Bahraini newspaper Akhbar Al Khaleej reported Sunday.

The case dates back to March this year when the man, whose specific nationality was not disclosed, was caught at the airport in Bahrain hiding 218 grams of drugs inside a condom.

He admitted in investigations to have procured the illicit stuff from his homeland for trafficking in Bahrain.

He also confessed to have been a drug addict for 10 years, a homosexual and an AIDS virus carrier.

The court sentenced him to five years in prison for drug smuggling and one more year for prostitution, the paper said.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of 3,000 Bahraini dinars and be deported from the country after serving the jail term.
