Srinagar: Thousands of Indian policemen patrolled Srinagar's streets on Sunday to enforce a strict curfew ahead of a planned rally by Muslim separatists.

Officials and witnesses said security personnel drove on police vehicles across Srinagar to tell people through loud speakers to stay indoors.

"As a precautionary measure curfew has been imposed," a government statement said, adding there was threats to the lives of some of the separatist leaders. It did not give any more details.

Muslim separatists, opposed to Indian rule in the region, are planning to hold a rally on Monday in Srinagar's history Lal Chowk city centre.

The separatists are reviving calls for independence in the Muslim-majority Kashmir valley.
