Patna: A man demanded Rs1 million from a senior minister in the Nitish Kumar government so he could please his girlfriend and lead a happy married life.
The story was uncovered after police arrested the caller, a physically-challenged person who had called up Bihar sugarcane minister Khursid Alam from his girlfriend’s cell phone demanding the money. He also messaged a bank account number to deposit the cash. The man along with his girlfriend was arrested.
“I had demanded the money as I wanted to marry my girlfriend and lead a happy married life. We would have fled the area once I got the money from the minister but my plan failed midway,” Bablu Ram told police during interrogation.
The minister filed a case of extorting with the police. According to the minister, he first received a message on his cell phone asking him to deposit of Rs1 million in a bank account number mentioned in the message. But since he did not respond, the accused called up on his mobile number on Saturday and demanded the money.
The minister said the caller even threatened to kill him if he failed to oblige. This forced the minister to register a formal complaint with police. This was the third time in quick succession that miscreants sought extortion from him.
Authorities said while tracking the phone call, the police team first nabbed a woman July Devi, mother of a child, from Jhajha area in Jamui district. Based on her account, police arrested the handicapped youth from neighbouring Sheikhpura district.
According to police, the man was having an affair with the woman for the past three years. He had even procured all the important documents, such as her Aadhar car and bank passbook details. Using these documents, the youth had procured a SIM and had been calling the minister to demand extortion but finally landed in police net.
