Abu Dhabi: The Directorate of Traffic and Security Patrols at Abu Dhabi Police has urged motorists not to stop on road shoulders unless in cases of emergency—especially near the “Darb” toll gates—after violations were detected through advanced smart surveillance systems.
Authorities have noticed that some drivers are intentionally pulling over on the shoulder just before the toll gates, waiting for the toll-free period to begin. This practice significantly endangers other road users and disrupts traffic flow.
In a video shared by the police, several drivers were caught stopping minutes before crossing the toll gate, only moving forward once the toll-free window opened.
The Darb toll system operates during peak hours only:
Morning: 7:00 am to 9:00 am
Evening: 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Tolls are not charged outside these hours, on Sundays, or on public holidays.
In addition to stopping near toll gates, the police flagged other dangerous behaviours such as:
Sudden lane changes
Obstructing traffic
Unauthorised entry into bus stops designated for public transport
Motorists were reminded of the following penalties under Ministerial Resolution No. (178) of 2017:
Wrong parking or obstructing traffic: Dh500
Sudden deviation: Dh1,000 and 4 black points
Unauthorised use of bus stops or special lanes: Dh400
Abu Dhabi Police stressed that all violations are being closely monitored through smart systems, and legal action will be taken to maintain safety and ensure smooth traffic flow across the emirate.
