Sheikh Khalifa said the exhibition is a good opportunity for the UAE and other countries in the region to acquire the latest military equipment at suitable prices. "There are definitely some economic advantages for everyone and the exhibition is a good opportunity for decision-makers to acquaint themselves with the latest defence technology and expertise," he added.

On the occasion, the UAE reiterated its policy of being a peace-loving country. "By no means are we promoting or supporting wars by hosting defence exhibitions. The UAE is a peace-loving country and President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan is a leader among peace-loving nations. Our country's policy concerns peace and defending our country," said Sultan Al Suwaidi, director-general of General Exhibitions Corp (GEC), organisers of Idex.

Al Suwaidi said exhibitions such as Idex in Abu Dhabi or in countries such as the UK, France, Malaysia or South Africa are a venue for international defence companies to display equipment. "These countries are not creators of war or decision-makers, but it is as per the strategy of each country which decides whether the weapons bought will be used against Muslims or others," Al Suwaidi said.

Appreciating the participation of Saudi Arabia and Jordan, Al Suwaidi said, "We wish there was a greater Arab presence. It will be bigger next time." But considering the current robust oil prices, it is likely there will be more buying of defence equipment by GCC countries, he said.
