Dubai: Dubai Public Prosecution has urged community members to refrain from airing their views about others on social media.
Hurling insults on social media or other communication channels is punishable under UAE law, the authority said, adding that stiff penalities would be imposed against violators.
The authority cited a recent case involving two friends, Hoor and Fares, who were largely in touch through social media. One day, Hoor confided in Fares about a financial crisis that she was going through.
Fares offered help by sending her a substantial amount via a bank transfer, and she promised to repay him when her situation improved.
However, things took an unexpected turn when Hoor claimed she never received the money. Fares presented proof of the transfer, but she denied receiving it and refused to return the funds.
Faced with no other option, Fares sought legal recourse, and the court ruled in his favour, requiring Hoor to repay him.
Infuriated, Hoor retaliated publicly on social media, insulting Fares and accusing him of deceit, which attracted significant attention.
Concerned about the damage to his reputation, Fares filed another case against her, providing evidence of the insults and threats.
Following an investigation, the court once again ruled in favour of Fares.
This incident illustrates the dangers of disclosures on social media and the legal consequences of such actions.
The law does not tolerate defamatory behaviour online or offline, and it serves to uphold justice and restore rights, according to state regulations.
