The Go plan, available only in India for now, will use OpenAI's GPT-5
OpenAI is launching an affordable new subscription plan in India, seeking to expand its artificial intelligence offerings in one of the world's biggest internet service markets.
The new ChatGPT Go plan costs Rs399 per month and allows customers to generate more images and interact with the chatbot more frequently than the free version, which will continue to be available. Among the other upgrades are higher limits on file uploads, longer memory for more personalised responses and more in-depth analytics.
The Go plan, available only in India for now, will use OpenAI's latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5. That's been designed to be more capable at coding, creative writing and reasoning through complex queries. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has called it a major step forward from the company's prior model iterations.
OpenAI sparked a wave of global interest across the globe when it launched ChatGPT in late 2022. Altman is now seeking to further enhance that popularity and ramp up business across the world. Earlier this year, OpenAI struck a partnership with SoftBank Group Corp. to sell AI services to Japanese enterprises, and it's also opening an office in Seoul in a bid to swell its userbase in South Korea, home to the largest number of paying ChatGPT subscribers outside the US.
Other paid India plans include ChatGPT Plus, which promises even better performance, and a much more expensive professional version for businesses. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month in the US.
India's market for AI models is currently dominated by US tech giants Alphabet Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. as well as China's DeepSeek. The South Asian nation is aiming to get developers to build large as well as small language models as part of its ambitious $1.2 billion IndiaAI mission.
Last month, Indian telecom services provider Bharti Airtel Ltd. partnered with Perplexity AI to offer free one-year subscriptions of Perplexity Pro to all 360 million of its local customers.
According to OpenAI, the ChatGPT Go plan includes:
Extended access to GPT-5: Users can enjoy more usage of the flagship model
Extended access to image generation
Extended access to file uploads
Extended access to advanced data analysis: Users can access tools like Python for data exploration and problem-solving more often
Longer memory for more personalised responses
Access to projects, tasks, and custom GPTs
Subscriptions will be billed automatically monthly, and can be canceled anytime. OpenAI said it currently did not support annual billing or the option to pay for multiple months in advance for ChatGPT Go, Plus, or Pro subscriptions.
OpenAI is also working to expand access to Go for additional countries and regions.
